I didn't figure this out from a textbook.
I figured it out from the inside.

I know what it is to lie awake at 2am not knowing what to do. To hear your own parents' voice come out of your mouth and freeze. To feel completely alone in the hardest season of your life — while everyone outside your home thinks everything is fine.

I consciously went through a process of uncoupling from the parenting I was raised with. Because I recognised it was not going to raise a well-adjusted young man. It was not going to help my son navigate his very dark period. That kind of parenting didn't leave me with tools. All I knew was I had to do the opposite of what I instinctually wanted to do.

I grew up in the townships of Sydenham Heights, Westbury and Coronationville in South Africa. I moved to Australia, built a 17-year career in organisational transformation, and then found myself sitting in a deputy principal's office once a month watching my son become someone I didn't recognise.

The story

What I eventually realised is that most of us were never taught the emotional skills that parenting requires. Not by our own parents — they didn't have them either. Not at school. Not anywhere. We were expected to figure it out on instinct. And when the instinct keeps failing, we blame ourselves instead of seeing the actual gap.

What changed things wasn't a single moment. It was a series of them.

A coach who asked: what is your favourite thing about him? And I — who had been so deep in the hard of it I could barely remember — stopped. And then remembered. His tenacity. His ability to make a decision and stick to it no matter what. The very things that had been driving everyone crazy were the things that would one day save him.

A young man I met while facilitating workshops for people in addiction at St John of God. Eighteen years old, speaking so fast I could barely follow him, couch-surfing, alienated from his family, utterly alone. I sat in my car afterwards and cried. Because I was looking at our future if we didn't get this right.

A winter morning, walking the dog, a call from Kings Cross police station. The floor dropping out.

I didn't want to fix him. I wanted to understand him. And then I had to learn to understand myself first.

Before founding Bee Positive Coaching, I spent over 17 years as an organisational transformation consultant — working with some of Australia's largest organisations on the hardest part of change: not the systems or the technology, but the people. The resistance. The old habits that feel safer than the new way.

I developed a rare and practical understanding of why systems resist change — and what it actually takes to shift them from the inside. A family is a system. When something keeps going wrong, the system is telling you something. And until the system changes, the pattern persists.

I brought that same lens home.

Today, my son Mark is 18. He owns his own digital marketing agency. He works as a sales representative. He is studying. He just boarded a plane for his first work trip, and we dropped him at the airport.

It didn't happen because of one decision. It happened because of a thousand small ones. And because someone decided, in the hardest seasons, to stay curious instead of afraid.
